  • There are over 100 ethnic groups in Australia, ranging in number from a few individuals to several thousand. This book inquiries into issues and processes which effect them all. The book is structured into four sections. The first looks at the changing pattern of Australian society, plotting the shift from monoculturalism to pluralism and raising issues of life chances and opportunities. The second section focuses on issues of sociocultural adaptation and conflict and processes of adaptation. The third section examines more closely the family, social and cultural environments, which help construct possibilities and preferred options for various ethnic groups. The fourth and final section deals with major social questions of participation and equity in areas such as the maintenance of cultures and the emergence of a national culture, political partisanship and government policies directed towards access and participation. The theme of commonality as well as diversity emerges from the sections, as does a picture of change. Australia currently faces the prospect of increased fragmentation through the maintenance of numerous diverse cultures or the emergence of a new national culture which inforporates aspects of various cultures but develops its own uniqueness.
